When we think of braces, we always think of people who have forwardly placed teeth, or teeth that are crowded and appear like a mess when they smile. But, apart from these obvious signs, there are many subtle indications that tell your dentist that you need braces.
Let’s look at a few subtle indicators that qualify you to undergo orthodontic treatment:
- Mismatch in midlines– Did you know, your facial midline should coincide with the midline of the upper teeth and lower teeth? When there is a mismatch in coinciding of the midlines, there is a strong indication that the teeth are not properly aligned and this calls for orthodontics treatment.
- Missing teeth not replaced for a very long time- Did you ignore the replacement of your tooth or teeth that were removed a very long time ago? When a missing tooth is not replaced in time, there is a shift of teeth in its place that disrupts the natural bite as well as the alignment of the teeth. This condition where teeth have not been replaced required orthodontic correction to either close the gap or create enough space to enable tooth replacement either by a bridge or implant.
- A tilted smile line– When someone smiles, there is a smile line that is created by the upper teeth which are parallel to the lower lip line. When there is a tilt in the upper teeth on one side, there is an obvious abnormality seen in the parallelism of the smile line. In this case, orthodontic treatment is needed to correct the tilt in the teeth to restore the natural smile curve.
- Visibility of only upper teeth– When you smile, the upper teeth are majorly visible, but, on pulling down the lower lip, the lower front teeth should also be seen. However, in some people, when the lower lip is retracted, the lower teeth are not visible. This means that the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth more than the required 2mm. This condition, known as deep bite, needs to be corrected by orthodontic treatment to avoid any future gum and bone trouble.
These signs may be subtle, but your dentist would look for them when you go for your routine visits. So, do not ignore your dental checkups twice a year!
